Tips to Prevent Cavities

Cavities are tiny holes in the teeth that could lead to further complications. They occur when acids produced by bacteria in the mouth continually erode the enamel. The reaction between oral bacteria and the food you consume is what results in these acids.

However, complacency in treating cavities can make decay-causing bacteria to damage the tooth further down to the root canal. Nevertheless, all thanks to the field of dentistry that have provided measures that can be used to prevent or cure the tooth cavity.

Daily Brushing and Flossing

Maintaining healthy oral hygiene is the first step to preventing cavities.  By brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, it will help to reduce plaque and disrupt the activities of decay-causing bacteria.

Flossing should not be neglected because they can penetrate tiny spaces that cannot be accessed by brush. Floss every side of the teeth properly and do not forget to brush with a fluoride enabled toothpaste. Fluoride does not only help to protect the enamel but also fight off cavity formation.

Beware of Your Diet

In order to maintain healthy teeth, you must abstain from the consumption of some foods and drinks. The culprits here are soda, sports drinks, and energy drinks. At times, the so-called “sugar-free drinks” contain some corrosive causes that damage the enamel and expose the teeth to decay. Some fruit juices also contain a high amount of acid.  The best liquid to consume regularly is water. It has a neutral pH, helps to promote saliva production, and has no negative impact on our teeth.

Foods that contain more starch or sugar are also capable of promoting cavities and decay (cookies, fries, doughnuts, chocolates, and chips). This is not to say you shouldn’t consume them, but it should be minimized. It’s crucial to brush after eating in order to adequately clean off your teeth; if not, you’re developing a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

Regular Dental Check-ups

Constant check-ups and professional cleaning services are a great way to maintain proper oral hygiene. The dentist will help to cleanse various parts of your teeth that cannot be accessed by a brush or floss.

Also, it will help to detect early signs of cavity formation or gum disease. There are lots of therapies that can take place while you visit your doctor. All these are for the overall health and well-being of your mouth.
